“Oh, These Stairs”: Why I Started Silver Compass Property Group

After living in their Portland area house for 30 years, it was becoming clear that this beloved home was no longer as comfortable as it once was.

About five years ago, I started to hear this comment from my mom A LOT.  After living in her wonderful Portland area home with my step-dad for 30+ years, it was becoming clear that this beloved house was no longer as comfortable as it once was. A place that had not very long ago still been at the heart of living their best lives was now making daily life increasingly difficult. Something had to give.

Fast forward to 2024 and when I look out my own kitchen window I can see my mom’s new single-level home, AND the house where my brother and his family live. Our solution was to come together in a multi-generational “compound”, ages 3 to 83, with a different living space to suit everyone well in the present and the future.

Our compound is not something that would work for everyone, and for us it was a long process with lots of kitchen table conversations and a heck of a lot of planning. But the end result is well worth the time, effort, and emotion it took to make it happen. We’re all feeling like where we live is supporting our best lives again.

A Personal Journey Becomes a Professional Mission

The 5-year journey to where we are now, our family journey, changed more than just my address. It also refocused how I think about real estate and how I want to serve my city professionally. I saw an opportunity to combine my own experience, my real estate skills, and my background in life and wellness coaching to help others navigate what can sometimes be very tricky life transitions. And that’s why I started Silver Compass.

The Silver Compass Vision

At Silver Compass, we believe that housing decisions after 55 aren’t just about real estate – they’re a critical part of writing your next chapter in LIFE. And just like every story is unique, so is every person’s vision of what their best life looks like.

The 55+ community in Portland is wonderfully diverse. Some folks are thinking about their next move because they want to be closer to grandkids, while others are excited to finally have the house to themselves. Many are looking ahead to retirement and wondering if their current home will still make sense in a few years. Some are ready to be done maintaining their own home and experience the convenience and support of community living. Others want to stay in their familiar homes as long as possible but need to make strategic upgrades for comfort and safety.

What brings our community together isn’t age or specific housing needs – it’s the desire to make thoughtful choices about where and how we want to live. Whether you’re planning ahead or ready for a change now, whether you’re looking to simplify or just shift gears, our mission is to help you navigate these transitions with clarity and confidence.

Our Approach

The Silver Compass approach combines practical real estate knowledge with genuine understanding of life transitions. We know that finding your next home isn’t just about property features and price points – it’s about making sure your living space supports the life you want to live.

We’ll share local market insights, practical tips for planning ahead, and real stories from our community members who have successfully navigated their own transitions.

Future posts in our senior real estate blog will dive into topics like:

  • Understanding different housing options in the Portland area
  • Smart strategies for timing your move

Most importantly, The Silver Compass Chronicles will be a space for topics that go beyond the basics of real estate and explore what matters most to you as you think about how to write your own beautiful next chapter in Portland.

Let’s Stay Connected

I’ll be sharing new posts twice a month, focusing on the topics and questions that matter most to our community. If there are specific subjects you’d like me to address, or if you have questions about your own situation, whether you’re in Portland proper, Beaverton, Lake Oswego, or anywhere in our metro area, I’d love to hear from you. You can reach me directly at [email protected] or 503-806-4277.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to housing decisions after 55. Your next chapter is yours to write, and I’m here to help you explore your options with confidence and clarity.
